Wednesday Reads and My Time at RT

I went to RT and came back with 28 books. All free. My friend came back with 104. She bought 16 of those. Just goes to show you what you can come away with. She worked at getting books. I didn’t. For a newbie, she did pretty darn good. She also wants to go to next year’s RT, which will be in Vegas. I don’t think I want to go. Too far and too expensive for me. The year after will be in Atlanta. Now, that’s more my thing. It’s only an 8 hour drive there! J

While at RT, I did get some more people to sign up for my newsletter. I probably would have gotten more if I had remembered to ask them. D’oh! And I sold two books during the giant book fair. Not much, but two more books than I sold last year, so that’s good. I also gave away 9 copies of Ghostly Liaison at the Kensington event. One to a woman who had already read the book (and loved it—did I mention that?). She just wanted an autographed copy. Awwww!!!

I have to say, I had a lot more fun at this RT than I had at previous ones and I owe it all to my friend. We had a blast (and laughed a lot – mostly because of Boris the spider). It really does make a difference when you go with someone you know (even if you don’t go to all the same events). I’m so glad she had a good time, too. I think she’s hooked, now!

Now…on to what I read this week:

May 19: “My Name is A’yen” by Rachel Leigh Smith, book 1 in A’yen’s Legacy series, a sci-fi romance at 302 pages long. Blurb from Goodreads: They've taken everything from him. Except his name. The Loks Mé have been slaves for so long, freedom is a distant myth A'yen Mesu no longer believes. A year in holding, because of his master's murder, has sucked the life from him. Archaeologist Farran Hart buys him to protect her on an expedition to the Rim, the last unexplored quadrant. Farran believes the Loks Mé once lived on the Rim and is determined to prove it. And win A'yen's trust. But she's a breeder's daughter and can't be trusted. Hidden rooms, information caches and messages from a long-dead king change A'yen's mind about her importance. When she's threatened he offers himself in exchange, and lands on the Breeder's Association's radar. The truth must be told. Even if it costs him his heart. It’s an interesting story, but a difficult read for me. I won’t be reading book 2.

As you can see, I didn’t read much and it took me a while with that one. I’m looking forward to reading the last Love at Stake book (up next!), but I also promised to judge a writing contest and received the entries on Monday. Thank goodness I can’t judge while I’m walking on the treadmill, so I will get my reading in. But my writing? Well… I’ll just space the entries out so I get my writing done, too. It feels like forever since I’ve written! I miss it.

So… If you start reading a book that is difficult for you, do you finish it or stop reading? I find I can’t NOT finish a book I’ve started. Wonder why that is? Any theories out there?

Have a good Wednesday and happy reading!

Stacy

Hey, glad you had a good time at RT. AS someone who is stunningly bad at self-promotion, I can relate to not asking people to sign up for the newsletter.

I tend to finish what I start. My most recent struggle to the finish line was Kerouac's On the Road--I think to appreciate the book, you had to be there. I am finding myself becoming less patient, but I still tend to finish, can't say why.

I'm so glad you had a good time. I hope Boris can say the same. Imagine the stories he tells his spider friends. :)

I used to finish books I've started, but not anymore. Life's short and there are so many other books out there.

Glad you had such a great time. Laughing is the best.

Tim just brought me home a new book yesterday. It's about making homemade dog food and treats.

Jeff - The more I'm forced to interact with people, the easier that self-promo thing is getting. Not easy, just easier. At least I'm talking to people!

Maria - I guess if I keep picking up books that aren't doing anything for me, I'll eventually quit. But when I paid money for said book... it's darn hard!

Ivy - A new cookbook! Bet you were thrilled! And yes, laughing is ALWAYS best! :)

Glad you had fun at RT - and sold books!

I used to finish everything I started, but now, life's too short to read books I'm not enjoying. I had one to judge for the Prism contest one year that was written in such a dense, lush, literary style I had to read it very slowly to figure out what was actually happening. Also, it was first person present tense, which I LOATHE. I sent it back to the coordinator to be reassigned, because I would not have been able to finish it (let alone my other entries) by the deadline!

Jennette - I've read some clunkers in contests, but was too lazy to return them. :)
