Wednesday Reads

You’d think with the cold weather keeping me indoors I’d get more reading done. You know, curl up beside a fire, sip some coffee or hot chocolate, and just go to town. It certainly sounds like fun. Instead, I’m writing more, which is just as enjoyable. Here’s what I read during the week:

Jan 1: “Beautiful Creatures” by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl. This is a supernatural YA book with romantic elements, Book 1 of the Caster Chronicles. Blurb on cover: Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she’s struggling to conceal her power and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps, and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever. Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town’s oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them. In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything. My daughter told me to read this book (after we saw the movie). Said I would love it. I’m always hesitant to read YA (I’m not exactly the writer’s audience), but my daughter has rarely steered me wrong. I loved this book! I even loved how it was told from Ethan’s point of view (first person). If not for the fact I want to read Doctor Sleep (Stephen King) next, I would delve into the next book of this series, because this book was hard to put down! I gave it 5 stars on Goodreads.

I’ve set a goal to read 90 books in 2014 and I’m already behind! Well, I do tend to read more in the summer. Or maybe I just read shorter books in the summer. The first five books I have planned to read in 2014 are all over 500 pages long. That really makes a difference, doesn’t it?

So, what are you doing during this cold snap?

Happy reading!

Stacy

Good for you for writing more, that's what I need to do. Stay warm!

Jeff - Woke up to 9 degrees this morning. Almost a heat wave! Haha!

I tend to clean more when it's cold. Fortunately, it doesn't get cold here very often. We're back in the 60s tomorrow.

--sorry.

Maria - 60s sound good right about now. Don't know when we'll see that next. At least it's warming up.

I just finished the dishes. Yesterday I baked, and today I'll bake some more. Writing bakes, actually.

Stay warm.

Ivy - I'll not be doing much baking, so you make sure you do enough for both of us. :)

"Clawblack" by Mike Cooper.

Michael - I hope that's what you're "reading" and not "doing"! Although, if you got a lot of snow, you could be clawing your way back. :D Sorry! Couldn't resist.

Well, since this latest cold hit just after the holiday, I spent quite a bit of time packing away Christmas and returning the house to normal.

Linda - I got the ornaments put away, but the tree is still up. Then again, the basement got a wee bit wet (so glad I procrastinated!), so I'm waiting before I take it down there. :)
