Finished Reading “Amplified” and Feeling Ho Hum, but I’m Back at Writing

I am in some kind of a funk. At least it’s not affecting my writing. I finally opened up The Alien’s Change of Heart and am working on it. I was kind of hoping writing would get rid of the funk, though. It hasn’t. And man, it doesn’t take much to take me deep down in the funk, either.

Can’t pinpoint exactly what is causing it. I think it’s just a lot of little things that have finally just overwhelmed me. I wish it would stop, though. I hate feeling this way.

Here’s what I read since my last update:

Book 17

Dates read: July 20-31, 2025
Title: Amplified
Year of publication: 2024
Author: Cassie Sweet
Genre: Sci-fi mystery
Series:  Mage Corp, Inc #1
# of Pages: 224
Paper or plastic: Trade paperback
How obtained: Purchased from author
Blurb from book: Dead Bodies – they’re a job hazard for overworked and burned-out Mage Corp Agent Nolen Trex. When the deceased is one of his informants, caused by the fry from an illegal magical amplifier, Trex tends to take the death personally. Add to that the body was found in another informant’s quarters and it opens a whole can of space garbage he’d rather not deal with. The only way to get information off the dead is to hire a necromancer to wake the dead, and boy, he’s not looking forward to dealing with one of those.
Necromancer Raakyr Glis has done some shady things in his past, but none as bad as working as a courier for a crime lord distributing illegal amps. When he’s called by Mage Corp to wake a dead man he recognizes as a recipient of an amp he’d delivered, he must skirt the line between his duties to the brotherhood of Necromancers and concealment from his clandestine activities, which could cost him everything—including the lives of his remaining family.
As more bodies pile up—all with amp malfunctions—Raakyr must throw in his lot with Trex to bring a larger galactic conspiracy to light and stop the crime lord for good.
Recommend: Yes
My thoughts:
I enjoyed this story. I had asked the author if she had any male-male romances (because I was looking for a book for my daughter) and she indicated this one was the closest she had. Not that it’s a romance (far from it) or much of a male-male story (there is attraction there, but that’s about it). Still, it was a fun read. Yes, I had to read it first because the story looked fun. And it was. Now, I’ll give it to my daughter. She thought the story looked fun, too. Hopefully, she won’t be disappointed.

I mentioned a few posts ago that Ghostly Protector was a finalist in a contest I entered it in. I got word that it did not win. Oh well. It’s not like I have been a finalist all that much (once before), so that was great. I can only hope that those who had to read the book liked it enough to want to read the others.

Happy Reading!

Reading Update and a Writing Contest

The writing organization I belong with (which used to be a chapter of RWA, but broke out on its own in 2021) is having a writing contest. Ignite the Flame is a little bit different than other writing contests. It is geared toward romance as you submit the scene where your couple first meet. You can register and read all the details here: Contest - Central Ohio FictionWriters | Official Website (cofwevents.org). Submissions accepted through August 31.

It costs $30 and all submissions will get valuable feedback on their work. It’s why I entered contests before I was published. If you know anyone who would be interested, please share with them. Thanks!

Here’s what I read since my last update:

Book 24

Dates read: August 9-14, 2022
Title: Waking the Dead
Year of publication: 2019
Author: Kerry Blaisdell
Genre: Paranormal/supernatural suspense
Series: The Dead Series #2
# of Pages: 248
Paper or plastic: Nook
How obtained: Purchased
Blurb from the Goodreads: Hyacinth always assumed dying would simplify her life. But when her new boss, Archangel Michael, sends her on her first official mission—to retrieve a powerful rock from a collector in Germany—things go downhill fast. For one thing, the Dead keep popping up, expecting her to guide them to the Afterlife. For another, her part-demon nephew Geordi's powers are starting to leak out, at age seven. What if Michael finds out about him? Worse, what if Satan does?
Then there's her love life-after-death. Rooming with a dead French cop no one else can see is complicated enough. But when Jason, Geordi's lying Dioguardi Demon cousin, resurrects himself—so to speak—all Hell breaks loose. Literally. Can Hyacinth get Michael's rock back before Satan steals its powers and breaks free of his prison? Or will her single-minded pursuit put those she loves—and the rest of the world—in the path of Satan's fury?
My thoughts: This is a fun series. And they aren’t romances (if that matters to you). If you enjoy Supernatural, you’ll probably enjoy these books too. I’ve already purchased book 3.

The weather sure has cooled around here. The mornings have been awesome for walking! Don’t know if the humidity is gone for good, but I will certainly enjoy what I got while I got it.

Happy Reading!

Reading Update and Vote for Biting the Curse

Biting the Curse is up for a RONE award. The first step is to get enough votes to make it to the second step. That’s where you come in. You can vote for my book!

Here is the link: https://indtale.com/rone-awards-week-one-april-13-19

First, though, you have to register on InD’tale before you can vote. Registration is free and you also get subscribed to their free magazine. You can cancel it at anytime.

I realize not everyone likes to register for stuff they don’t want, and if that’s you, I understand. But if you are already registered, or don’t mine registering, I would really appreciate your vote. The top 5 vote getters go on to the next round, which means someone (or many someones) will READ my book and judge it accordingly. I’d really like to get in that round. So please vote!

Here’s what I read since my last update:

Book #15

Dates read: April 5-10
Title: The Third to Die
Year of publication: 2020
Author: Allison Brennan
Genre: Crime/Suspense
Series: Mobile Response Team #1
# of Pages: 458
Paper or plastic: Hardback
How obtained: Purchased
Blurb from Book:. An edgy female police detective… An ambitious FBI special agent… Together they are at the heart of the ticking-clock investigation for a psychopathic serial killer. The bond they forge in this crucible sets the stage for high-stakes suspense.
Detective Kara Quinn, on leave from the LAPD, is on an early morning jog in her hometown of Liberty Lake when she comes upon the body of a young nurse. The manner of death shows a pattern of highly controlled rage.
Meanwhile in DC, FBI special agent Mathias Costa is staffing his newly minted Mobile Response Team. Word reaches Matt that the Liberty Lake murder fits the profile of the compulsive Triple Killer. It will be the first case for the MRT. This time they have a chance to stop this zealous if elusive killer before he strikes again But only if they can figure out who he is and where he is hiding before he disappears for another three years. The stakes are higher than ever before because if they fail, one of their own will be next…
My thoughts: It was a little more procedural than I like in my crime/suspense. This might be a series where I wait until it’s out in paperback before I read the next one.

I have more good news, too. I finished the first draft of Ghostly Protector! How sweet is that? I’m taking a mini writing break now, especially since I’m signed up for a couple of classes this month. It’s nice to be able to just concentrate on those, although it also feels weird not writing, too.

My next book might be in the Bitten by Love series. A friend asked for a certain couple. Now, this was a couple I hadn’t thought about writing, but once she put that thought in my head, the characters started talking to me. Now I have to write it. Right? Because I’m sure it’ll be difficult to shut them up!

Happy Reading!

Biting the Curse Is a Finalist!!

First off, Happy Veterans Day. If you served, thank you for your service. And if you’re like me, take advantage of a free meal somewhere. There are lots of restaurants treating veterans today. I plan on visiting a couple. Why not, right?

Last week I got some WONDERFUL news! My book, Biting the Curse, was a finalist in the Oklahoma Romance Writers International Digital Awards contest. I got a badge! Ain’t that cool?

A great review AND a finalist. I’m feeling really good about this book. Don’t know if I’ll enter it in as many contests as I did Ghostly Interlude, but I will definitely enter it in the Ritas (Romance Writers of America’s contest). Not that these contest actually help sell books. At least, not that I’ve been told. I guess I just feel the need to be recognized since I suck at advertising!

I’m hoping now that I’ve sent my next release, Finding the Perfect Mate, off to my beta reader I’ll be able to write more on the next ghost book. Of course, I think I screwed up somewhere. Good thing I meet with my plotting group tonight. I really need the help!!

I plan on revealing the cover to Finding the Perfect Mate in my next newsletter. Also plan on giving away some neat Buffy and Supernatural cards I picked up at Dragon Con last year. If that interests you, then sign up for my newsletter. The link is on the sidebar of this blog and at my website http://stacymckitrick.com.

So … Do you think awards help books? How about movies? I have to admit, I never planned on watching Rocky until it won the Oscar for Best Picture. And then it turned out I loved the movie. Go figure!

Happy Monday! And Happy Veterans Day!

No Wednesday Reads But I Won!

I haven't finished the book I'm reading, but this happened on Monday:

Ghostly Interlude Won in the Strut Your Stuff Contest! I even got a badge! See?

This is the very FIRST contest I have ever won. EVER.

And in case you were wondering, it came in third in the Readers Choice portion (the voting portion). Not too shabby, huh?

In other good news... St Louis Blues won the Western Conference last night. Whoo hoo! Now I have a team to root for in the finals. Go Blues!!

And finally, my short story, Savannah's Destiny (a mix of my Bitten by Love and Ghostly Encounters series), is available to preorder (is that how you say it?).

Here's the blurb:

Darren, vampire and bartender at the Savannah Riverfront Hotel, has a ghost problem by the name of Austin that won’t go away. He’d love nothing more for the ghost to move on, but Austin is keeping mum. That is until his sister, Savannah, attends a book convention that is held in the same hotel. Darren believes she’s the ticket to get rid of the ghost as well as a reward for putting up with the spirit for so long.

Austin doesn’t want the blood sucker’s help, but he doesn’t want his sister hurt, either. Now that his body has been found by the police, he’s forced to cooperate, but does everything he can to keep the vampire from sinking his fangs in Savannah.

And here are the preorder links:

So... Are you going to watch the Stanley Cup Finals? Who are you rooting for?

Happy Reading!

There’s Still Time to Vote!

The Strut Your Stuff Contest is still open for voting. Ghostly Interlude is included in the paranormal/sci-fi category. If you’ve rated it, thank you! If not, it’s not too late. Contest runs through May 3rd.

Here’s the link again:
http://www.maineromancewriters.com/p/book-cover-contest.html.

The weather has been warm (and dry) enough to go walking outside. I’m not going far, yet, but it’s a start. I’m certainly walking faster (and farther) outside than I was on the treadmill. And I enjoy exploring my new neighborhood. Especially since it’s growing with new construction.

So… Do you plan on seeing Avengers: Endgame this weekend? I wanted to, but most of the seats are already sold out for this weekend. Have to see if Hubby can go into work late during the week and get tickets for the first showing (since it’s cheaper then). So I do plan on seeing it. Looks good!

Happy Friday!

Ghostly Interlude is a Finalist in a Contest!!

Last week I opened an e-mail and couldn’t believe my eyes. It started out... Congratulations!

I really don’t think I’ve ever had an e-mail start that way before. And I know I’ve never been a finalist in a contest. Now I can say I have to both!

Ghostly Interlude is a finalist in the Strut Your Stuff contest!!

I had to do some research to see which contest this was (I entered the book in 13 of them—still have to hear back from 5 of them, so yeah, didn’t final in 7), because it was mentioned in the e-mail that the winner is determined by reader votes. Took me a bit (because the Maine Romance Writers removed the contest rules and such from their website), but I finally found what I was looking for (and next time, I might want to remember to put MORE information in my contest list).

Ghostly Interlude was judged on the cover and blurb (which kind of makes me feel good about the blurb since I wrote it!). Starting today (I hope) through May 3, readers are able to start voting.

And here’s the link to vote (which is supposed to go live today): http://www.maineromancewriters.com/p/contest.html. I have absolutely NO IDEA at the time I wrote this (Sunday evening) who the other finalists are (because the link wasn’t working yet) [EDITED: I CHANGED THE LINK, THE OTHER ONE DIDN'T WORK, THIS ONE DOES]. But here are my cover and blurb to Ghostly Interlude:

Maggie Russell—legal assistant by day, horror writer by night—gets the scare of her life when she wakes up in a strange café without any idea of how she got there. But if she tells anyone about her sleepwalking escapades, she could lose her grandmother’s house, and she’d fought so hard to keep it.
Dean Parker is a private investigator whose office is next door to Maggie’s law firm. He’s been eyeing the pretty brunette ever since she started working there, but getting involved with anyone isn’t in his game plan. When he finds out she’s been having sleeping problems, he suspects her money-grubbing cousin is involved. Instead, he discovers something worse: a ghost is living with Maggie and it appears another may be possessing her.
Dean is determined to help Maggie rid her home of the uninvited guests. He just never figured his attraction to her would be reciprocated. Keeping his distance is no longer an option, though. If he fails, Maggie could very well be possessed forever.

So… If you like what you read, I would really appreciate your vote. My book is in the paranormal/fantasy/etc. category, so I’m only competing against other paranormal/fantasy/etc. type books. And, of course, if you do go over there and find something you like better, by all means, vote for them instead. That’s the risk I take sending people over there.

Sunday was an exciting day. Got up o’dark thirty, met my daughter and a friend, and drove to Pittsburgh to watch the Penguins and Islanders play. The game did NOT go as I had hoped (since the Penguins lost and are now down 3 games to none), but I had a good time. We got invited to dinner at a Facebook friend of my daughter’s (who was smoking chicken and ribs) and the food was great! And much appreciated!

Now I gotta hope that the Penguins don’t get skunked in this series. I do have two other teams to root for, though. The Golden Knights and the Columbus Blue Jackets (I just don’t like them when they play the Penguins). We’ll see how the playoffs go.

So… How did your weekend go? Mine was super busy! I thought Sunday would be my hard day to write (it wasn’t!), but it ended up being Saturday. Only got 201 words in, so I broke my streak of 500+ word days, but not my writing streak in general. And starting today I get to work on Biting the Curse again since I got my edits back. I see a busy week ahead of me, too!

Happy Monday.

Wednesday Reads and Book Contests

Here’s what I finished reading this week:

Book #47

Dates read: October 26-November 2
Title: Vampires Like it Hot
Year of publication: 2018
Author: Lynsay Sands
Genre: Paranormal romance
Series:  Argeneau #28
# of Pages: 372
Paper or plastic: Mass market paperback
How obtained: Purchased
Blurb from book: “Vampires…” When Raffaele Notte pulls a barely dressed, disoriented woman from the ocean, the last thing he expects is for her to utter that word. The immortal has come to the island resort to help his cousin, but now, it seems, there are rogue vampires dining on unsuspecting tourists. And he soon realizes that not only is Jess a target, she’s also the life mate he’s been waiting for…
Vampires are real. Jess would’ve never believed it until she saw them with her own eyes. She knows she has to get off the island, and her gallant rescuer has offered to help. There’s something about Raffaele that’s unlike any man she has ever met, and his touch sends pleasure through her that is beyond all imagining. But when Jess discovers who he really is will she risk life as she knows it for a chance of forever by his side?
My thoughts: The twenty-eighth in the series and I’m STILL not tired of them. They’re so much fun to read. One of the best series out there if you’re looking for paranormal, romance, and a bit of comedy.

Book Contests
I debated on whether or not to enter Ghostly Interlude into the Ritas (RWA published book contest). In order to enter I have to judge and all the entries are on pdfs (plus, I can’t read my favorite genre because I entered my book in it). Ugh! I hate reading pdfs (and we all know how I feel about contemporary romances). But I caved and entered my book anyway. Figured I don’t get a new book out all that often, might as well enter it into all the contests it’s eligible for. Maybe one of these days I’ll actually final (and yes, I’d be happy just to do that).

So… What do you think about book contests? Good publicity (if you final) or a waste of time and money? I still haven’t figured out which it is, but I can’t seem to stay away. I always have hope.

Happy Reading!

Ghostly Interlude Blurb and Other Important Stuff

Here I thought I would have problems posting on Friday for lack of information. Instead I get information overload!

First off, My Sunny Vampire is on sale! E-books are 99 cents during February. You can find all the buy links HERE.

FYI: the digital version of Ghostly Liaison is still for sale at 99 cents. Such bargains!

I entered A Vampire Wedding in the Judge a Book by Its Cover contest (paranormal category) and it is now up for reader votes (click HERE to start). So, if you have some spare time and are interested, I wouldn’t mind you giving my cover some stars (like, maybe, five??). Of course, don’t let me stop you from voting for other covers. Heck, you might find something interesting!

I wasn’t sure if I should enter the contest, but I really do LOVE that cover. Hopefully other people do, too. I wouldn’t mind finally winning a contest!

As promised on Wednesday, here’s the blurb I came up for Ghostly Interlude (book 2 in the Ghostly Encounter series):

Maggie Russell is a horror writer who works for lawyers to pay the bills. But she gets the scare of her life when she wakes up in a strange café without any idea of how she got there. She’s starting to think her sleep walking is getting out of hand.

Dean Parker is a private investigator whose business is next door to the lawyers. Ever since Maggie started working there he’d been eyeing the pretty brunette from afar. He’d rather not explain how he can see and communicate with ghosts. Or the fact he should never have been born.

When Maggie suspects her sleep problems could be caused by her sue-crazy, money-grubbing cousin, Dean steps in to help. Instead of finding evidence pointing to the cousin, Dean discovers something even worse: a ghost is living with Maggie and appears another may be possessing her.

As much as Dean despises ghosts, he’s determined to help Maggie rid her home of the pest. He just never figured that Maggie might actually find an interest in him, too. But keeping his distance is no longer an option. If he fails, Maggie could very well be possessed forever.

Does it sound intriguing? Granted, if you’re not into paranormal romance, it probably won’t do a thing for you. And if it does…Yay!

So… Watching any football this weekend? Or will you be too busy voting for covers? Hee hee.

Happy Friday!

Wednesday Reads

I’ve been busy. Here’s what I read this week:

Feb 24: “Sweet Revenge” by Rebecca Zanetti, the second book in the Sin Brothers series, a romantic suspense at 341 pages. Blurb from book: Matt Dean was born to fight…and kill. Members of a secret black-ops military unit, he and his brothers were genetically engineered by the government to be the perfect soldiers with an expiration date. Now, with time running out, he’s gone rogue in a relentless quest for the one person who can save them. His mission leads him to Charmed, Idaho…and to a beautiful woman with eyes like emeralds and a body made for pleasure. Laney Jacobs knows the mysterious, handsome stranger is trouble from the moment he walks into her bar, looking for a job. She’s spent years running from her own past—the last thing she needs is a romantic entanglement. But Matt’s strong arms offer her protection, and his gentle touch promises passion unlike anything she’s ever known. As lethal forces surround them, revealing explosive secrets about Matt’s past and putting everything—and everyone—he holds dear in danger, can he save them all before time runs out? Holy cannoli! I can’t believe how long I waited to get back into this series. Stupid me!! This book (this series) has everything I love: hot guys, sexy scenes, and a suspense that keeps me turning the pages. Totally entertaining. Got the next one sitting here and I’m not waiting this time!

Feb 27: “Blind Faith” by Rebecca Zanetti, the third book in the Sin Brothers series, a romantic suspense at 368 pages. Blurb from book: For Nate Dean, love is a four-letter word. As part of a secret black-ops military unit, he and his brothers were genetically engineered by the government to be ruthless soldiers with an expiration date. They were loyal only to one another…until Nate laid eyes on the woman who stole his heart and blew his world apart. Now, years later, his family is still paying the price for his mistake. But as time runs out, there’s only one person who can save his family, the very woman Nate swore he’d never trust again. The moment Audrey Madison spies Nate across a crowded ballroom, she can barely breathe. He’s just as undeniably sexy as she remembers, yet there’s an edge to him now that’s as irresistible as it is dangerous. When he asks for her help, Audrey can’t refuse. But she has secrets of her own—secrets that, if Nate ever discovers them, may cost them both their lives… You know when you get toward the end of the book and you don’t want to put it down? Well, I pretty much felt that way through the whole thing!

Mar 1: “Total Surrender” by Rebecca Zanetti, the fourth and final book in the Sin Brothers series, a romantic suspense at 353 pages. Blurb from book: Piper Oliver knows she can’t trust him. They warned her that the tall, dark, and sexy black-ops soldier Jory Dean would try to win her over with his steel-gray eyes and deadly charm, but she won’t be conned by this man they call a traitor. All she has to do is figure out the science necessary to save his life, and she’s done. Something isn’t adding up, though, and she won’t rest until she uncovers the truth—even if it’s buried in his deep, dangerous kiss. Jory will do anything to reunite with and save his brothers—even kidnap the gorgeous woman who’s working to deactivate the deadly chip in their spines. But the forces determined to destroy his family won’t let them go so easily. Keeping Piper alive is more than he bargained for—and so is his burning desire for her. But with every second bringing him closer to certain death, can he afford to lose himself in her hot and willing embrace? Loved it. Loved the whole series. It thoroughly entertained me, and isn’t that what a book should do? I probably could have read it faster, but forced myself to slow down and savor the read.

Well… My giveaway was pretty much a bust. No one won any of the books since only nine people played. Yep. Nine. Told you I sucked at advertising. Of course, you’d think Amazon might have helped a little. At least in Goodreads, the giveaways are listed. I couldn’t find anything like that in Amazon. Then again, maybe I’m blind. It’s been known to happen.

So… What are you reading? Is it knocking your socks off or just passing the time?

Happy Reading!

Happy Leap Day and Giveaway Ends Tonight

Seems strange to call this leap day. We’re not leaping anything. In fact, we’re adding a step. So wouldn’t we be leaping over the 29th the other three years? We’re strange people, aren’t we?

My Amazon giveaway ends at midnight tonight. If you want a chance to win a copy of Blind Temptation, here’s the link: https://giveaway.amazon.com/p/b3c987b14528a2ea. I doubt all the prizes are given away before the deadline.

Know what I learned from this giveaway? That I suck at advertising.

Then again, I did get a C in that class in college. HATED. IT.

I also learned that just because other people have success with something doesn’t mean I will, too.

So, will I do another giveaway with Amazon? I doubt it. I’ll just stick with giving away stuff to my newsletter subscribers, or bribe people with a giveaway to subscribe to my newsletter (I will be at three conventions this year) and hope their word-of-mouth helps me out.

So… Did you watch the Oscars last night? I did. It’s one of my guilty pleasures, even though I probably didn’t watch any of the movies nominated.

Happy Monday and leap away!

Wednesday Reads and a Giveaway

I’m giving away two copies of Blind Temptation over on Amazon. This would be a paper book, not a digital one. If you’re interested, give it a shot (you’ll know instantly if you win or not). If you know someone who might enjoy my books, give them the link. Here’s the link: https://giveaway.amazon.com/p/b3c987b14528a2ea. It costs nothing to click!

Now, on to what I read this week:

Feb 19: “Ashley Bell” by Dean Koontz, a paranormal thriller at 560 pages. Blurb from book: Bibi Blair is a fierce, funny, dauntless young woman—whose doctor says she has one year to live. She replies, “We’ll see.” Her sudden recovery astonishes medical science. An enigmatic woman convinces Bibi that she escaped death to that she can save someone else. Someone named Ashley Bell. But save her from what, from whom? And who is Ashley Bell? Where is she? Bibi’s obsession with finding Ashley sends her on the run from threats both mystical and worldly, including a rich and charismatic cult leader with terrifying ambitions. Here is an eloquent, riveting, brilliantly paced story with an exhilarating heroine and a twisting, ingenious plot filled with staggering surprises. Ashley Bell is a new milestone in literary suspense from the long-acclaimed master. Literary suspense? Hmmm… This is definitely NOT a horror story, but it is paranormal. For a long book, it was a relatively fast read for me. I do have to say, I was a bit confused over the title. I was 130 pages into the book and nothing about Ashley Bell, just Bibi Blair. Now, I don’t normally read the blurbs on authors I regularly buy from (or gifted, as this one was), but this time I had to know why the book was titled Ashley Bell. If I had waited maybe another five to ten pages, I would have gotten to her name. Oh well… Another issue I had with this book was the voice. I’ve read all of the Odd Thomas books and this almost sounded like Odd Thomas was telling the story. I guess that happens when you read an author well, huh? I did love the twist there in the middle and it made me want to know more what the heck was going on. Overall, an enjoyable read.

Note to JeffO: Penguins play the Bruins tonight on NBCSN. Are you going to watch? I am! Go Pens!!

So… Have you had a taste of spring recently? It was a lovely day for a short walk yesterday. I look forward to the days I can take longer walks and not freeze! But I’m guessing it won’t be this week. It’s supposed to snow. Bugger!

Happy Reading!

I Did It, My Afghan, and Pills

Well… I did it. I entered Blind Temptation in the Judge a Book By Its Cover contest (in the paranormal category). We’ll see how it does. Once I’m informed that it’s up for the online voting portion (it has two: online and judges), I’ll post the link here. You know, in case you WANT to vote for little ol’ me. The judged portion is completely separate from the online portion, but I wouldn’t mind winning either. Okay, I do mind. I want to win the judged portion so my cover will show up in the ad in the RWR (Romance Writers Report—the magazine RWA sends out to their members). Why else enter, right?

Of those that commented on Monday’s post, no one knew what design is on the afghan that shows up in my tree picture. Here’s a better picture of it (should be able to enlarge it by clicking on it). Do you see the kitty cats?

I had made this afghan for my mother-in-law (many, many years ago). When she passed (in 2001), I made sure to get it back (since her stuff was being given away). I love that thing. Hopefully she did too.

I saw my physician assistant (PA) yesterday and got that referral for physical therapy. He also suggested I take glucosamine chondroitin, to help with the cartilage (or lack thereof) in my knee. I have a feeling one of these days I’m going to be taking just as many pills as my hubby does. Except mine will all be supplements.

Have I ever mentioned I hate swallowing pills? Ugh.

I’m already taking iron, calcium, and vitamin D. I was taking magnesium, but I think that was the cause of my stomach problems (they have since ended since I stopped taking the pill—a pretty good indicator if you ask me). I know I wouldn’t have to take all those pills if I ate right, and maybe one day I will, but until that day…I’ll stick with the supplements.

Tomorrow night hubby and I will be taking my son’s girlfriend and her daughter to the Madrigal Dinner (held each year at Wright State University). Why aren’t we taking my son? Well… He and daughter are performing as dancers (son used to be part of the choir when he attended the college and before that he was one of the trumpet players). It’s a nice Christmas party. Lots of music, singing, and dancing (performance, not participatory). All the participants are dressed in madrigal style (1500s?) garments, and the food’s not so bad, either. We’ve been going since 2000 (man, that’s a long time!). Sure, it’s the same food and usually the same skits, but it’s a fun time, plus I like seeing my kids in action.

So… What are you up to this weekend? Shopping? Parties? Whatever, have a great one!

I Need Advice

I plan to enter the contest, Judge a Book by Its Cover. It’s run by the Houston Bay Area Chapter of RWA.

This is the cover I’m entering:

I can only enter it in one category and I’m torn between two: Science fiction/Fantasy/Paranormal or Sexiest Cover. Which one do you think it would have a better chance of winning?

I’ve entered this contest the past two years (My Sunny Vampire and Bite Me, I’m Yours) without much luck. Maybe this year will be my year?

I could enter Ghostly Liaison, too (since it was also released this year), and maybe I will. It only costs $15 and I could use the exposure. If I did enter Ghostly Liaison, which category do you think it has a chance in? Same two categories apply.

By the way, I also entered Blind Temptation in the RITA contest (RWA’s big published book contest). Don’t know what kind of chance I have, but figure that’s FIVE more people who will read my book. And this book needs more readers!

It could use some more reviews, too, but that’s an issue the RITA won’t fix. Unless I final, I suppose. Wouldn’t THAT be something?

I could have also entered Ghostly Liaison, but decided against it. Besides the $50 entry fee, I have to mail 5 books (5 more if the book finals). Copies of Blind Temptation are a lot cheaper for me to buy than copies of Ghostly Liaison. Maybe that’s not a very good reason, but I have to draw the line somewhere.

Knee update: Hubby has been calling me Hop-a-long. My knee is still sore. But, it’s getting better. It hurts the worst when I get up after sitting awhile (and awhile can be a little as a couple of minutes). My knee objects to straightening (and bending and walking). At least it doesn’t hurt when I’m sitting. That’s because I’m not moving it! Hahahahaha! J

Hey, if I can’t laugh over this, I might as well throw in the towel, you know?

So… Please give me your honest opinion (as if you’d do anything else). Do my covers stand a chance? Or should I just forget about the whole thing?

Have a great weekend!

Wednesday Reads and Motivation

My motivation to write is returning. Not there entirely (I can still get easily distracted), but the recent ads for My Sunny Vampire (and subsequent reviews—some good, some bad), and then reading J.R. Ward’s blog about The Shadows (how she came to write that ending), has lit a fire under my butt. So much so, I went back to work on Ghostly Liaison yesterday and I think (THINK) I finally (FINALLY) got past the difficulties to move forward. Talk about a relief. We’ll see how today goes, though. If I get two good days in a row, then I know I’ve done something right.

Now, onto what I read this week (hmmm… I bet you can tell which book I finished):

the shadows by j.r. ward
Jun 22: “The Shadows” by J.R. Ward, the 13th book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, a paranormal romance at 576 words. Blurb from Goodreads: Trez “Latimer” doesn’t really exist. And not just because the identity was created so that a Shadow could function in the underbelly of the human world. Sold by his parents to the Queen of the S’Hsibe as a child, Trez escaped the Territory and has been a pimp and an enforcer in Caldwell, NY for years- all the while on the run from a destiny of sexual servitude. He’s never had anyone he could totally rely on... except for his brother, iAm. iAm’s sole goal has always been to keep his brother from self-destructing- and he knows he’s failed. It’s not until the Chosen Serena enters Trez’s life that the male begins to turn things around... but by then it’s too late. The pledge to mate the Queen’s daughter comes due and there is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and no negotiating. Trapped between his heart and a fate he never volunteered for, Trez must decide whether to endanger himself and others- or forever leave behind the female he’s in love with. But then an unimaginable tragedy strikes and changes everything. Staring out over an emotional abyss, Trez must find a reason to go on or risk losing himself and his soul forever. And iAm, in the name of brotherly love, is faced with making the ultimate sacrifice... Oh man…. Totally did not see that end coming (I purposely avoided anything that mentioned “spoilers” when it came to this book – like I do for any of her books – thus I didn’t read her blog until I finished the book). I loved this story (and all the other little stories that goes on around the main one), but I think it’s going to take me a day or so to recover. Really! This was one gut wrenching story.

Not sure if you noticed in my sidebar, but the Goodreads Giveaway for Blind Temptation is under way. I’m hoping people who enter (and add the book to their to-read list) will buy it when they see it’s only $2.99. I’ve had a spike in sales this month (actually this month has been the best ever), but I think that’s mostly attributed to MSV’s freebie sale (which ends July 3rd in case you didn’t know). Whatever, I’ll take it!

So… Do you like entering Goodreads giveaways? If so, have you ever won? If so, did you read the book? My hubby has won once and actually read the book. He didn’t like it. Hasn’t stopped him from entering again, though. I usually enter when I see a favorite author giving away an autographed copy. One of these days I’ll win. Maybe. It’s not like I NEED any more books. I just WANT them! J

Happy Reading!

No Wednesday Reads. Life Has Been…Busy

I haven’t finished a book this week. Partly because I was busy with RAGT. Partly because I just didn’t feel like reading (which doesn’t bode well for the book I’m reading, does it?). So much for being two books ahead. I’m right on schedule now, but fear I’ll be one book behind before too long.

Ahhh, but I only have TWO more contest submissions to judge and then THAT will be over. Whew!

Of course, I’m thinking that contest has a LOT to do with me not wanting to read, too. One of the stories I was judging was just a bit too close to the book I’m reading and I started getting the stories mixed up. Oops. Better to just not read and finish judging, huh?

Between RAGT and my constant doctor visits, I feel like I haven’t been to the fitness center in ages. Monday I had a follow-up appointment which will now require a referral to another doctor in Cleveland (Yes, my condition is serious. No, I’m not feeling sick. Go figure!), and yesterday I had a cyst aspirated from my breast (that thing popped up out of nowhere, just wanting to compound my misery I guess). Not a fun event, but man, I feel better. I swear, I felt like I needed to breast feed a baby!

I still need to exercise, though (doctor’s orders, now), but after the aspiration, I have to wait a bit before I lift weights. So I guess I won’t be doing that until Thursday or Friday. Hope the weather is nice so I can go walking. I’d rather walk outside than on the treadmill because when I walk on the treadmill, I like to read and since I don’t want to do that… Man, what a mess, huh?

So… Have I totally depressed you? I think I depressed myself. So cheer me up. What fun thing are you doing today?

Cold Weather Rant

I’m pretty sure I mentioned being one of 10 sponsors for a Kindle we're giving away. If I haven’t, bad me! Anyway, check it out. The winner is drawn on the 22nd, so you still have time to enter. It’s on Facebook and you can enter HERE.

The weather has been a bit on the chilly side here, lately. Woke up to negative temps yesterday which caused a lot of schools to close. I get why city schools close, but colleges? It’s not like the students are walking to school or outside waiting for a bus. Plus, I consider college students ADULTS. Hello! You won’t be excused from work for negative temps. Oh, unless you’re a teacher at the college. Then I guess you do.

Sometimes I think the people around here are wimps. It’s Ohio. It’s gonna get cold in the winter. Gripe all you want, but deal with it.

Okay, rant over. Whew. Hadn’t had one of those in awhile.

Tomorrow is my sweetie’s birthday. We’re going to our friend’s house to celebrate. Then on Sunday we’ll use the coupon he received for a free dinner at BD’s Mongolian Grill (he loves that place).

So… What are your plans for the weekend? Anything good?

Have a Happy Friday!!

Wednesday Reads and Writing What You Know

I had fun at the library event on Monday night. Even got to read a little passage from Ghostly Liaison (and got laughs in all the right places, too, and if you’re interested in what I read, it’s posted below my “signature”). Why did I get to read? Because someone wanted an example of “writing what we know.” The snippet I read was a scene where my character had to face a snake, and he doesn’t like them.

Guess what? I don’t like them either. Thus…write what you know.

I thought it was a good example. And even though I wrote it on the humorous side (because I know how hilarious I look to my husband when I’m freaked out about such things), fear was still shown (because I know all about the fear—of snakes, spiders and bugs).

I think some writers get hung up on “Write what you know.” We all have life experiences. We all feel emotion (okay, most of us). That’s what you know. The other stuff? That’s where research comes in and you learn what you WANT to know.

Did my stint result in any sales? Well…only six people attended the event, so it’ll be hard to determine. It would be nice if someone liked what I read enough to go out and buy it. Still, it was an interesting discussion and the audience had some good questions.

As for my reading for the week, here’s what I read:

Feb 4: A contemporary romance at 240 pages long.

Feb 10: A contemporary romance at 318 pages long.

My judging assignment is now complete. Yay! Not that it was a hardship. I did enjoy everything I read. I just wish I could have shared them with you. Next Wednesday I can start sharing again. That’s if I finish the book by then. It’s a long one. J

In disappointing news... Bite Me, I'm Yours did not win (or come in 2nd or 3rd) in the Judge a Book By Its Cover contest (in the readers portion or the actual judging). Darn! I really thought that cover had a chance. If you want to see the winners, go HERE.

So… All that judged reading has put me three books ahead of schedule (for a 90-book year). How’s your reading going this year?

Happy Reading!

Stacy

Here’s that snippet from Ghostly Liaison I read:

Bridget’s scream came from behind. As Rob rushed toward her voice, she slammed into him. “What’s wrong? Are you okay?” He grabbed her upper arms. “Didn’t you hear me calling you?”

“Snake! There’s a snake in the yard!”

“What?” Did she say snake?

She hopped from one foot to the next and bounced out of his grasp, becoming nothing more than a blur of arms and legs. The sliding door slammed shut.

Crap! Did she expect him to kill the stupid thing? If there was one thing he avoided, it was those slithery monsters. Ah, but he could save the day if he slayed the little biter. Of course, that meant actually slaying the little biter. Shit.

Barnaby ran off to the corner, doing his strange routine once again—jumping up on the fence, licking the air. The dog was seriously going crazy.

Rob searched the yard. By the side of the house his ax proudly stood embedded in the pile of wood. After wrenching the potential weapon free, he tiptoed over to the pool, making sure he wouldn’t inadvertently step on the creature.

His arms trembled as he gripped the wooden handle and held the blade above his shoulder. Thank goodness she wasn’t witnessing what a wuss he’d become. That would certainly deduct some points in his favor. “Okay, buddy. Show yourself and be prepared to meet your death.”

The weeds reached above his ankles. He hadn’t been back in this part of the yard since Charlie’s death. With the amount of rain that had fallen this spring, he’d never gotten around to clearing the area like he should. Then again, his last tenants should have taken care of the yard as part of the lease agreement.

A pile of branches and weeds lay off to the side and the dirt had been turned over beside the pool. Is that what she’d been doing back here, clearing the weeds? Then why hadn’t she answered him? Or had she been hiding? He straightened and lowered the ax. There wasn’t any snake. She’d said that to avoid him. But why? Was she still upset about the other night? Dammit. He should have called sooner.

Something landed on his shoes. A dark ropelike item with a yellow stripe down its back lay across his foot.

He yelled and kicked out. The creature went flying and bounced off the fence. With his heart ready to pound out of his chest, he charged the snake, roaring like a mad man on a mission.

Goodreads, Newsletters, and Last Day to Vote

Due to a promotion I’m involved in, I’ve gotten lots of new followers on Goodreads (which I link this blog to), so hopefully if any you new followers are reading this and would like to sign up for my newsletter, click HERE. Next newsletter out will have news of my next release, Blind Temptation. I’ll even share a snippet (since I don’t do that on this blog).

And if anyone here would like to follow me on Goodreads, you can do that HERE. Or you can just friend me. I accept those, too!

By the way, do you like snippets? I try not to bombard you with that, but if it is something you’re interested in (or curious), let me know in the comments. I certainly don’t mind sharing! And if you think I should keep them to my newsletter, let me know that, too. I will NOT feel insulted. Honest.

Today’s the last day for readers to vote for the Judge a Book by Its Cover contest, where Bite Me, I’m Yours is included in the paranormal category. If you haven’t voted and want to, click HERE. I appreciate those of you who have already voted for my cover. Keeping my fingers crossed it finals in either the readers voting or the judges voting (except when I’m typing, because, well, then I couldn’t type!). Bite Me, I’m Yours hasn’t really found its audience yet and I’d like to think if it won, the audience will find it! Plus, I really, REALLY love that cover. It is perfect for that book. That is John and Sarah! J

Last week I set a goal to write 5000 words. I actually made it a day early. I think pushing myself to do that has really helped get my story to gel in my head. At least I’m getting the words on the page. I have no idea where it’s all going, but I’m starting to enjoy the ride. I remember how much Ghostly Liaison really kicked my butt when I was writing the first draft (and it turned out pretty good), so I guess it’s no surprise GHOSTLY INTERLUDE would do the same. Here’s hoping for the same outcome!

Tonight I'll be at the Wilmington-Stroop Branch of the Dayton Metro Library for "Romance and Chocolate." Several authors and will I discuss romance books (and eat chocolate, of course!). This will be the third year I've been involved in this. It's starting to be fun, too. Wow. Never thought I'd think that. But if you happen to be in the area, come say hi!

So… Have you noticed it’s staying lighter later? It’s not much, but at least it’s heading in the right direction—Spring! Now, if it would only stop snowing! J

Happy Monday!

Wednesday Reads and Some Contests

First off, I’m one of the sponsors for a giveaway that’s taking place on Facebook HERE. If you’re interested in winning a Kindle, then head on over and enter.

Second, I entered the cover to Bite Me, I’m Yours in the Judge a Book by Its Cover contest (paranormal category). Readers (that would be YOU) can vote in a separate judging. If you want to check out all the covers, click HERE. And sure, I’d love it if you voted for mine, but I won’t go so far to ask, especially if you find a cover you like better (that’s the risk I take for sending you to that site, right?).

And finally, we’re down to what I read in the last week. I’m playing it safe and not even posting WHAT book I read (thus my previous Wednesday Reads was edited), so I’m only mentioning the type (and length). I will say that I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read so far (which is a relief). Here’s what I read:

Jan 28: A historical romance at 361 pages long.

Jan 29: A historical romance novella at 130 pages long.

Jan 30: A romantic comedy novella at 205 pages long (print was large)

Jan 31: An erotic (M/M) romance novella at 164 pages long.

Feb 2: An erotic (ménage) romance at 243 pages long.

Five books in a week. Not too shabby, huh? Two more books and then I’m done.

I have to say, I’ve ordered a couple of books since I’ve received this shipment to judge and I can’t wait to get into them. Of course, I’ve owned a lot of books before I purchased those, too. I tell you, deciding what to read NEXT is always the hardest. Well, except when you judge. Then the decision is taken away. So glad I’m enjoying the books, though. That is a plus.

So… how do you decide which book to read next? In order of purchase or whatever strikes your fancy? I’ve been known to do both.

Happy Reading!

Stacy
