The Popularity of Book Reviews

Before I became a writer, when I only read books, I never EVER left a review. It never even occurred to me to do such a thing. Now it seems like every author wants their book reviewed (which I can understand—I’d like that, too, but I’m certainly not going to beg for them). I can’t tell if this reviewing craze is a new thing or if I’m just learning about it because I have a book out now.

Kind of the same issue I had with Bruce Springsteen. I moved to NJ (close to his hometown) when “Born in the U.S.A.” was released. I had never heard of him before, so I figured he was popular there because he was local and it took me awhile to realize he had become popular everywhere.

So… what do you think? Has reviewing books (either on Amazon, B&N, or Goodreads) always been an issue (and I’m just noticing it because I’m an author) or is it a new thing because of the glut of self-publishing? This curious mind wants to know!

By the way, on Saturday I noticed a copy of My Sunny Vampire sold on Amazon (I follow the sales on novelrank.com). So of course I mentioned it on Facebook (I was happy!). On Sunday I went to see that #1 again (yeah, I'm a sap) and found it had become a 2. I sold another! Made for a super weekend.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, before the first sale, the ranking of MSV (on Amazon) was over the 1 million mark. That first sale brought it up to around 300,000 and that second sale around 130,000. Doesn’t take much, does it?

Are you Nerdy?

After spending yesterday working on revising Blind Temptation and writing Ghostly Interlude, trying to think of something to write for the blog kind of fried my brain.

I was having some fun with friends on Facebook earlier this week by posting videos, and one of the videos that got posted was by Weird Al Yankovic. I just love his videos (even if I don't always know the song he's making a parody of). Who here doesn't love "Eat It"?

Anyway, this video of "White and Nerdy" cracks me up, more because of who is featured in it (beside Weird Al, that is) and not because of the song. Hope it brings a smile to your face this Friday!

Wednesday Reads

Edits for Ghostly Liaison are finished (for now), leaving me time to work on my other projects. You know, like writing something NEW (Ghostly Interlude). I'm still revising Blind Temptation, too, but I hope to be able to work on both projects. Oh, and continue reading. Gotta keep doing that. I’ve got LOTS of books to read! And here’s what I read during the week:

Jun 21: “Dead Heat” by Allison Brennan, the 8th book in the Lucy Kincaid series, a romantic(ish) suspense. Blurb from book: Assigned to San Antonio’s Violent Crimes unit, Lucy Kincaid joins a team of seasoned veterans and newer agents for a task force called Operation Heatwave. It’s supposed to be a simple sweep of known offenders with outstanding warrants. But when Lucy and her team try to bust two local brothers for jumping bail, she walks into a hotbed of pure evil. Their names are George and Jaime Sanchez. They are charged with murder, drug trafficking, and worse. And one of them is still out there. As Lucy races to capture Jaime Sanchez, more shocking evidence comes to light. The brothers have been using their basement as a holding cell for children they kidnapped for the cartels. When George agrees to turn on his brother, he is murdered behind bars. Now Lucy has no choice but to go outside the law. Enlisting the help of her boyfriend Sean Rogan and his mercenary brother Kane, she will risk her career—and both of their lives—to bring down a crime lord’s empire…before more innocent lives go up in flames. I really love this series and watching Lucy’s relationship with Sean grow. The suspense is top-notch, too (I had problems putting this book down). One of these days I’m going to go back and read the books that introduced these two characters (featuring a sibling—they both have a lot!). I want to know EVERYTHING! I gave this 5 stars on Goodreads.

Jun 22: “Ever Mine” by Eden Ashe, a romantic fantasy novella. Blurb from Goodreads: Can a kidnapped fairy and a human find love despite all odds? Nathan Alexander’s batty aunt has done it again. This time she’s sent him a rare plant he doesn’t want. Imagine his surprise when he finds a kidnapped fairy hidden within its leaves. As a man who heads a non-profit organization for abused women and children, Nathan makes it his mission to help her find her way home. All her life Katenia was warned about the evilness of humans. Never was that proved more true than when she was kidnapped from her quiet valley home. Thrust into the human world, Katenia must fight her very instincts to trust Nathan if she ever hopes to return to her rightful place…and to her normal thumb-sized fairy form. But with their lives in danger, finding home…and love…will be a journey worthy of a fairy tale. I read this story because I wanted to read something short, but found I would have loved for this to be longer and more involved. Still, if you’re looking for a sexy novella, and you like fairies, then this is your book. I thought it was a cute story and gave it 4 stars on Goodreads.

If the weather cooperates today, the husband and I might venture down to Kings Island. I don’t plan on taking my camera, so no pictures to torture you with. J I’d like to ride the new roller coaster, but seeing as how I didn’t ride last year’s new coaster (my husband wouldn’t go on it and I wouldn’t go alone), I’m kind of doubting I’ll be riding it. I Went to Cleveland and I've Got Pictures!

What happens when you renew a Marriott Visa for a small fee? You get to choose any hotel (up to a class 5) to spend a night at. Last year we spent that night in Pittsburgh and attended a Steelers game. This year we spent that night in Cleveland and attended an Indians game. Both trips were great, but I think Cleveland’s was a little bit better.

In Pittsburgh we stayed at the Residence Inn. It’s a nice place and right across the street from PNC Park and a couple of blocks from Heinz Field. No complaints whatsoever. In fact, I’d go back (as long as I didn’t pay full price—that place is way too expensive otherwise).

In Cleveland, we stayed the Renaissance Hotel, a short walk from Progressive Field (formerly Jacob’s Field). Apparently, they’re a bit higher on the fancy scale than Residence Inn. When we got there and they saw my hubby is a Gold member of Marriott, they upgraded our room (to the 12th floor), gave us free valet parking, and gave us a free breakfast in the restaurant Sunday morning (which made me feel like we were back on a cruise). We didn’t get anything like that in Pittsburgh (well, except for the breakfast, but then EVERYONE got a free breakfast there!).

Have to say, I can see how people could get used to treatment like that. So glad I didn’t have to pay for it!

For dinner, we ate at the Tilted Kilt. It looked interesting and wasn’t far from the baseball field. The place was really cool. I ordered the shepard’s pie and I have to say, it was the best I’ve ever had. Okay, so the only other place I’ve ever had it was at the Cheesecake Factory, which is really good, but nothing compared to the Tilted Kilt. I would go back to the Tilted Kilt for that dish alone! Yum!!

Our seats at the Indians game were decent. Except for the sun. I almost brought my hat and really wished I had. It would have come in handy.

The Indians ended up losing, but they made it interesting (10 innings). All in all, a wonderful experience. I look forward to making the trip again.

I'm Going to Cleveland

And I’m not taking my computer. Shocker, huh?

Why Cleveland?

Well, we’ve never been to an Indians game and we’re trying to hit all the ballparks (at least all the ballparks around us). You’d think living in Ohio for twenty-three years we’d have already been to their ballpark, but the last time we visited Cleveland, the Indians weren’t in town. This time we made sure they were (and we have tickets to a game!).

Since we’ll go up on Saturday and return on Sunday, I don’t know if we’ll make it to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame again (we might save that for another trip, with some friends who have never been—that place really is awesome) or if we’ll go back to the Hard Rock Café (I already have my magnet). It’s just a nice weekend alone with the hubby without any real agenda (except for the game). And we’ll be taking the convertible, so the weather better be good (please, no rain!).

So… What reason would you need to visit a city you have no relatives in? J

Wednesday Reads (and a Movie)

Last night I saw “Only Lovers Left Alive” with my daughter. Afterward, I asked my daughter what the movie was about. She said it was a vampire movie with Tom Hiddleston. Yep, that about summed it up. Not quite what I expected (certainly nothing steamy), but it was quirky/funny and entertaining, albeit strange.

On to what I read during the week (because that’s why you’re really here, right?):

Jun 11: “How to Marry a Highlander” by Katharine Ashe, a historical romance. Blurb from Goodreads: With seven troublesome half sisters to marry off, Duncan, the Earl of Eads, has one problem: he's broke. With the prospect of marriage to the pompous local curate, Miss Teresa Finch-Freeworth has one dream: to wed instead the handsome Highlander she saw at a ball. How does a desperate lady convince a reluctant laird that she's the perfect bride for him? She strikes a wager! If she can find seven husbands for seven sisters, the earl must marry her. Duncan has no intention of wedding the meddlesome maiden, and he gives her a deadline even the most audacious matchmaker can't meet—one month. But Teresa sets terms, too: with each bridegroom she finds, the earl must pay her increasingly intimate rewards . . . This was a reading assignment so I might not have delved into the book with anticipation. Sure, the blurb sounded interesting, but this is a historical (and a Regency at that) and I’m no longer fond of them. Well, maybe I should clarify. I’m not fond of British historicals. I don’t have any issue with American historicals, but that’s beside the point. Yes, this book had too many hyphenated last names and the brogue took some getting used to, but I really enjoyed the story and especially the romance. I had fun reading this, so color me surprised. Still didn’t understand all the terminology, though. That’s why I only gave it 4 stars on Goodreads.

Jun 15: “Alienated” by Melissa Landers, a YA sci-fi romance. Blurb from book: Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them. Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket. Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing though: no human boy is this good-looking. But when Cara’s classmates get swept up by anti-L’eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn’t safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara’s locker, and a police office has to escort her and Aelyx to class. Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend: she’s fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and  its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet. The sci-fi in this book is lite (meaning: not techy), which suited me just fine. This YA novel is in third person, which thrilled me (and surprised me a little). And yes, there’s romance (which, hello, I love). The ending was a little un-ended, but now that I see it’s the beginning of a series, I can kind of understand why. I’m not thrilled with these kinds of series (I prefer series with different couples in the same “world”), but I am curious as to how it will all end. Overall, the book entertained me and I enjoyed it. I gave it 4 stars on Goodreads.

Seeing how Melissa’s aliens didn’t seem all that different than the aliens in the alien book I wrote (and hope to one day get published), I checked out some of the reviews on Goodreads. She really got slammed from some reviewers on the sci-fi part, which makes me think maybe I need to label MY alien book as a romance with sci-fi elements! Gee, is there such a thing?

I’m Gonna Go to the Movies (plus a Cover Reveal)

It’s been awhile since I’ve wanted to go to the theatre. Two whole months! Just hasn’t been much that I’ve wanted to see. Doesn’t stop me from reading the reviews of the movies playing in town, though, and on Friday I found the movie I want to watch. Showed the review to my daughter and the first thing she said was, “I want to see this.” So tomorrow my daughter and I will be going to see “Only Lovers Left Alive.”

This is a vampire romance (of sorts) staring Tom Hiddleston. I’m surprised I’d never heard of it before. It’s gotten good reviews. Maybe people aren’t as enamored of Mr. Hiddleston as I thought! Anyway, it’s playing for this week only at the Neon Movies (they tend to show the artsy films), and we’re going on $5 movie night. I’ll let you know if it’s any good (you know, in case you’re into vampire romance flicks).

Okay, now time for a cover reveal. Yeah, it’s for one of my stories. No, it’s not for “Bite Me, I’m Yours” (I’m still trying to find out when I can share that one!). This is for my short story, “Forever Thirty-Two,” the back story of the hero (John Pennington) in Bite Me. It was a story I needed to write (for myself) as I wrote Bite Me, and discovered it made an interesting short story. It’s not a romance (John doesn’t get his happy ending until the novel), but it has sex in it (so—warning, warning!). Anyway, the story starts out on New Year’s in 1957 in Columbus, Ohio and it’s snowing. I had an idea of what I wanted my cover to look like and I happened to be in Columbus on this past New Year’s Eve. I found a park across the street from a hospital (a hospital John could have been working at) and took several pictures. I would have preferred there being snow on the ground (it certainly was cold enough for snow), but probably wouldn’t have been able to GET to the park if it had snowed. I was just happy to have found a park that worked. J

My husband works with someone who loves to play around with photos. He was willing to create the cover for me so I gave him several different photos to choose from.

Eventually, I’ll be giving away my short story, hoping to generate some interest in Bite Me. Heck, maybe I’ll generate some interest in “My Sunny Vampire.” I can only hope.

My husband will format “Forever Thirty-Two” in epub and mobi versions (he wants the practice). Not sure if I’ll “sell” it on Amazon and B&N, since I don’t plan on charging anything. I may just feature it here and my website and Facebook. Or a newsletter, if I ever get off my butt to create one.

Hey! Did you notice? I added some reaction buttons (down below) for my posts. Forgot I could do something like that, and didn’t know I could make them unique. Frankly, I think the suckers should be big and bold (and maybe in an eye-catching color), but who am I to complain? The site is free, right?

A Rare Day

Tonight is the full moon. I love the moon, especially when it’s full. Don’t know why, it just fascinates me. Maybe there’s some truth to being born under the sign of Cancer. I’m a moonchild. J

So today is both our favorite day. I hope it brings good luck.

You know, like the LA Kings kicking the NY Rangers’ butt tonight and taking the cup! Yeah, I know I said I wouldn’t watch the Stanley Cup Finals. So I lied! So sue me.

Well, don’t go that far. Please! I don’t have any money anyway.

That also makes today a rare day, or so I’m told. No, not because my daughter and I happen to like the same day (okay, yeah, that could be rare, too), but because the next time a full moon falls on Friday the thirteenth it will be 2049. I’ll turn 92 that year. I sure hope I’m around to see it.

Oh, what am I saying? I’ll be around until I’m at least 100. I’ve been saying that since I was a kid, so why stop now?

So…you got any plans on this rare and spooky night? Or are you just planning on staying inside and away from all the crazies? I think I’ll be staying inside. Well, except to maybe go outside a few times and check on that moon. J

Wednesday Reads

Even when I attend a convention, I find time to read. Helps when my friend (and roomie) likes to, also. It’s a wonderful way to decompress, because even laid back conventions can still be stressful (at least to this writer). Anyway, here’s what I read during the week:

Jun 6: “Sixth Grave on the Edge” by Darynda Jones, the sixth book in the Charley Davidson series, a humorous & sexy paranormal. Blurb from book:  Most girls might think twice before getting engaged to someone like Reyes Farrow—but Charley Davidson is not most girls. She’s a paranormal private eye and grim-reaper-in-training who’s known to be a bit of a hell-raiser, especially after a few shots of caffeine. Her beloved Reyes may be the only begotten son of evil, but he’s dark and sultry and deeply sexy and everything Charley could hope for. Really. But when the FBI file on Reye’s childhood happens to land in her lap, she can’t help herself: She opens it… and then the real fun begins. First, Charley finds a naked corpse riding shotgun in her car. Then a man loses his soul in a card game. Throw in a Deaf boy who sees dead people, a woman running from mobsters, and a very suspicious Reyes, and things can’t get any worse for Charley. Unless, of course, the Twelve Beasts of Hell are unleashed… Love Charley. She made me laugh several times. Love Reyes. Especially the excerpt at the end in his POV (I wouldn’t mind more of that). But man, I don’t know how Charley can keep track of all her jobs. I got a little lost at times. Even so, I gave it 5 stars on Goodreads.

Jun 7: “The Road to Something Better (Jamett & Joseph Series #2) by Renee Vincent. I don’t know what genre this book falls under. Maybe contemporary romance. I guess the old classification would have been chick lit. I don’t necessarily care for that classification, though. Blurb from Goodreads: The road less traveled never had so many bumps. Jamie Sutherland never expects to connect with her sexy-as-sin neighbor, Joseph Scarbrough, especially after all the failed relationships she’s suffered. Not only does she find out he’s not quite “the player” she believed him to be, but that his heart bears scars much deeper than her own. Ready to take a chance on this unlikely match, she eagerly awaits their upcoming date and hopes that Joseph is the very companion she’s been waiting for all her life. Time and time again, the comical sporadic encounters resume in their loft apartment complex and Joseph eventually reveals that he is the building superintendent in a very unforgettable, Lucky-in-the-Diet-Coke-commercial fashion. While he's proficient in fixing Jamie’s clogged sink, he's not all that great at leaving his past behind. When Caroline, his yuppy ex-girlfriend, makes another surprise visit, Jamie's road to something better gets a little rocky. Will Joseph choose the familiar woman with whom he had a history, or the loyal friend who's given him a future? The story does NOT end with this book (as I suspected), but I am enjoying the story as these two get to know one another. I just kind of wish it were all in one book. Oh well, at least I’m getting credit for reading THREE (haha!). I gave this book 4 stars on Goodreads.

Jun 8: “The Gift of Something Grand (Jamett & Joseph Series #3)” by Renee Vincent. This is the last book of the series, a contemporary romance. Blurb from Goodreads: When those three little words aren't enough. Jamie Sutherland finds herself falling in love with her irresistible next-door neighbor, Joseph Scarbrough. No surprise there. But when she wakes up in his bed, she's stunned that even in her sleep, she can't resist him. As their relationship heats up, Joseph gives Jamie a key to his apartment and he finally gives Caroline, his relentless ex-girlfriend, the boot. Jamie's excited to think he just might be the one. But how do you tell the man of your dreams you love him when he insists that he can't fall in love? I enjoyed reading this series. Made me all happy and giddy at the end. The best way to read this series is back-to-back-to-back. I gave this book 4 stars on Goodreads.

Fun at RAGT

Look at me! Surrounded by books. Too bad they’re not all mine. J

The book signing at Lori Foster’s Reader Author Get Together (RAGT) went fairly well. I sold 4 books. Yeah, two of them went to my friend (who accompanied me), but a sale is a sale, right?

I don’t know how the blog thing went (if it was live or recorded or what), but I thought I did fairly well. My friend was sitting in the session and SAID I did, so I can only go by that. I do know I was FREEZING! The air was set to 65 and was blowing on me. And add that to the fact I was just a bit nervous (okay, maybe a lot), I couldn’t stop shivering.

But overall, I had a fun time at the convention. Met lots of friends and made some new ones, too. And my friend absolutely LOVED it. Now she’s interested in going to RT next year (which is in Dallas). If she decides she wants to go, I said I would go with her.

I think I hooked her on reader conventions. J Am I a good friend or what? Okay, don’t answer that!

Wednesday Reads

Have you ever anticipated the next book in the series sooooo much, that you re-read the series just to get ready for it? I did that with Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, but mainly because it had been YEARS between books. And I re-read the Twilight series four times, but not in anticipation of the next book. They were all out when I started on the first. I just wanted to read them over and over. Well, I’ve done it again, even though it hasn’t even been four months since I read Book 1 and Book 2. I love the series THAT MUCH.

So… Since I kind of cheated earlier on, counting short stories as books on Goodreads (and here), I am not counting the re-reading of those two books. That should make it all even, don’t you think?

Anyway, here’s what I read during the week:

May 29: Re-read “Playing the Game” by M.Q. Barber, Book 1 of the Neighborly Affection series, an erotic romance. The blurb and my “review” from when I first read it can be found HERE.

Jun 1: Re-read “Crossing the Line” by M.Q. Barber, Book 2 of the Neighborly Affection series, an erotic romance. The blurb and my “review” from when I first read it can be found HERE.

I enjoyed reading BOTH of these more the second time around. And there were parts of Book 2 that had me in tears the first time around and still hit me hard the second time around. Now, how good is that?

Jun 2: “Healing the Wounds” by M.Q. Barber, Book 3 of the Neighborly Affection series, an erotic romance. There are no safe words. There is only surrender. When Alice leapt into sexual games with her neighbors Henry and Jay, she didn’t plan to fall in love. She sure didn’t expect she’d be the switch between Henry’s commanding mastery and Jay’s submissive playfulness. But now she’s moving in with them, and she’d better figure it all out – fast. Trouble is, she’s never been a live-in girlfriend. The day after a traumatic first night at a BDSM club might not be the best time to start. Struggling to find her place within the lifestyle, Alice seeks equality in a relationship built on surrender. Learning to lean on Henry challenges the foundation of her self-worth. He’ll have to lean on her in return for their triad to find stability. But can her stoic dominant lover accept her as a confidante as well as a submissive? And will their love be enough to silence Jay’s emotional ghosts? ONE DAY! I read this book in one day! Man, I can't believe it's over, either (well, for now, I’ve been told there will be more—yay!). I loved it. An emotional ride for sure as well as some hot, hot, sex. I gave it 5 stars on Goodreads. When this series finally ends up in print (and it should), I will be buying them. And I will re-read them—again. They are KEEPERS and being on my e-reader just won’t do.

I finally watched the movie “Veronica Mars.” It never showed up around here in the theatre, but I received the DVD for Mother’s Day. I enjoyed it. It was nice seeing everyone again. And I mean, EVERYONE. I think every character from that series had a part in that movie in one form or another. I think the only character missing was Duncan Kane (anyone remember him?).

So… What books/series have you re-read? Was it just as good as the first time, or did you discover you enjoyed them more?

Stanley Cup Bummer

Hockey, hockey, hockey! Man, I had really wished the Chicago Blackhawks had won last night. Then I’d be watching the Stanley Cup finals. But no, they went and lost and I have NO desire to see the Rangers and Kings play for the cup. However, after seeing both teams play, I’m guessing the Kings will take it. They seem to have more energy than the Rangers. But that’s just my opinion. Don’t go putting any money on it, okay?

I’m still trying to get over this crud, but a book I’ve been waiting for since March has been released today (M.Q. Barber’s “Healing the Wounds”) and I can't wait to read it! Happy happy joy joy!! So glad I turned in my edits already. I won’t feel guilty reading! J
